Have you ever been to Kronstadt? This small town is located just 30 km from Saint Petersburg, and its fame has resonated since its foundation up to the present day. For over 300 years, Kronstadt has been known to people far and wide. Peter the Great founded this town—a fortress and port—in 1704 to protect Saint Petersburg from enemies approaching from the Baltic Sea during the Great Northern War. Even today, this small town continues to attract worldwide attention.

 The History Kronshtadt Museum

P1180547The History Kronshtadt Museum was founded in July, 1991. Nowadays it consists of 2 expositions at different places:

1) Exposition "Kronshtadt - Fortress. Town. Port."

The museum offers a time travel to find out about more than 300 years history of Kronshtadt, about glorious traditions of the town - fortress and port - and to learn its place in the Russian history.

20140919_143355Nowadays the museum funds counts about 8 thousand items belonging to 18-20 centuries. They comprise a lot of interesting exhibits: the fort "Kronshlot" model, a piece of the first in Russia and in Kronshtadt water-pipe system and numerous photos, documents and antique household objects. An interactive Blockade Room is presented in the museum, too. A special attention is devoted to the events of the 20th century - Revolution 1905-1907, Civil War and Intervention, Kronshtadt Rebellion.

2) Exposition "History of Shipwrecks."

(Leningradskaja str. 2)

 

The exposition "The History of Shipwrecks" is located in the building of an old water pipe tower. It comprises unique items raised from the battleship Portsmouth, frigate Oleg, battleship Gangut and other warships and trade vessels. These weapon and household items lay on the bottom of the Gulf of Finland for over 300 years and they are witnesses of the past epochs and national heritage of Russia.

 

Huge horizontal sun dial, two fountains and the sculpture of the water-carrier are situated in the park nearby the museum.

The Memorial Flat of St.John of Kronshtadt

Opened in 1999 the memorial flat appears to be a pilgrim spot. Inside one can learn about life of a famous priest and participate in prayings. St.John of Kronshtadt had been living here for more than a half of a century. He prepared inspiring sermons and wrote his spiritual diary which later became a famous book. He founded churches, took part in charity. St.John of Kronshtadt still cures people from different illnesses.

The Kronshtadt Sea Museum

The museum was founded in 2012 by public enthusiasts. The Kronshtadt Sea Museum  is aimed at historical and modern technic in diving, patriotical education. The exhibition inclides rare diving equipment and unique items connected with diving.
